Argentinas glacier spectacular for visitors

The breathtaking scenery of the Perito Moreno Glacier could inspire many tourists to visit Argentina this year, it has been suggested.

Identified as one of the world's most beautiful places by the Telegraph this week, the glacier is 18 miles long and can be found in Patagonia's Los Glaciares national park.

According to the newspaper, the glacier offers "spectacular scenery, even by Patagonian standards" and visits can be combined with a trip to other must-see places such as the Torres del Paine national park in Chile.

The Perito Moreno is up to 2,300 ft deep and is one of 48 glaciers fed by the Southern Patagonian Icefield.

Shelter Offshore recently described Argentina, along with neighbouring country Brazil, as one of this year's emerging markets for affordable properties.

The website described the two nations as "stunning havens for those who love fabulous properties, wide open spaces [and] gorgeous countryside".

Investors looking for an affordable country in which to buy a new property have been advised to consider Brazil and Argentina.

Compiling a list of some of the world's cheaper places in which to set up home, Shelter Offshore notes that the two South American nations are likely to appeal to British buyers due to a relatively low cost of living.

The website describes both Brazil and Argentina as "stunning havens for those who love fabulous properties, wide open spaces, gorgeous countryside and a way of life that can be as western or as local as you like".

Argentina's profile as a tourism destination is set to receive a boost this year as the country approaches its bicentennial celebrations, with Buenos Aires appearing on many 'must-visit' lists for 2009.

The Independent recently claimed that "Argentina's big, beautiful capital is looking better than ever" and recommended visiting the city in February or March to experience its famous Tango Festival.

Argentinian capital named top tourism city

Buenos Aires will be one of the best cities to visit during 2009, according to a leading travel guide.

The DK Eyewitness Travel Guides series has included the Argentinian capital in its Top 10 Cites for 2009 list, meaning property investors in the country could be in line for a substantial boost when tourism levels increase.

Buenos Aires features alongside other major destinations such as Cape Town, Copenhagen and Washington DC, while the ancient Moroccan city of Fez is also named in the list.

An Associated Press writer visiting Buenos Aires recently described it as "a cosmopolitan city best experienced through its monumental passions".

These include tango, football and the city's "vibrant cafe culture" which has produced hundreds of lively restaurants and nightspots.

The writer also described Buenos Aires as "a bargain" compared to large cities in Europe and elsewhere, with many of its cultural attractions benefitting from government subsidies.

Argentinas president unveils plan to boost tourism

The president of Argentina has announced plans to stimulate the domestic tourism sector, which could entice property investors to expand their portfolio in the Latin American country.

Following hot on the heels of a package to help consumers, farmers and businesses selling products abroad, president Cristina Fernandez spoke on Thursday (December 11th) of a strategy to support domestic tourism through the supply of no-interest loans, Reuters reports.

Some ARS300 million will be made available in interest-free loans, and both businesses in the tourism sector and Argentinean holidaymakers will be able to draw on this governmental support.

The loans period would last for six months.

According to President Fernandez, action is needed if the global economic turmoil's impact on Argentina is to be minimised.

"The important thing is to know there are measures that will help all Argentines confront the storm clouds that are coming," she told the news provider.

Ms Fernandez was elected as president in October 2007, and is the wife of former Argentina president Nestor Kirchner.

Property buyers head to unspoilt Argentina

Argentina's rural areas are attracting interest from property investors keen to escape the stress of city life, it has emerged.

Visiting the South American country's Parana Delta recently, a correspondent for the Financial Times commented on the beauty of its "idyllic setting", situated just one hour away from the hustle and bustle of Buenos Aires.

According to the newspaper, this area of Argentina is "an increasingly attractive destination for city-dwellers in search of a dream home in an easily accessible yet unspoilt natural wilderness".

John Packett, a retired British stockbroker who recently bought land in the delta, said that investing in Argentinian property still represents a "quirky choice" for some people, but one that is likely to become more popular.

"As the world continues to shrink, it's hard to imagine that this place will remain secret," he commented.

The Toronto Star also recently visited Argentina, with the newspaper's correspondent spending time on a traditional ranch, or estancia, near the town of Junin.

The rural areas of Argentina offer property buyers and tourists the chance to experience a traditional South American lifestyle, according to one travel writer.

While the hustle and bustle of Buenos Aires attracts a large number of visitors to Argentina, many people believe the true character of the country is revealed in its less populated areas, the Toronto Star's John Moore reports.

The Canadian journalist visited an Argentinian ranch - or estancia - on one of the country's vast interior plains.

Owner Estela Ocampo told him that the estancia represents "a different kind of lifestyle" for newcomers to Argentina.

"In a city hotel, you might never speak to the person who has the room next to you. But here … everybody gets to know each other and become relaxed and very friendly," she explained.

Providing a "welcome weekend respite for frazzled city-dwellers", according to the newspaper, the estancia has numerous attractions, including the chance to ride horses across the plains and sample asado, the traditional Argentinian barbeque.

Other attractions in Argentina include the Train to the Clouds, which takes passengers high into the Andes from the city of Salta.

Annual visitor numbers in Argentina are continuing to head upwards, according to official figures.

Hammurabi Nafouri, an adviser at the Argentine ministry of tourism said the South American nation attracted 2 million visitors in 2003, reports the Syria-Arab News Agency.

However, he added that this figure trebled to 6 million in 2005, making tourism one of the biggest sectors in the country's economy.

Mr Nafouri was speaking as he outlined plans to attract more visitors from places such as Syria.

Indeed, the two nations are currently engaged in talks designed to look at ways of boosting mutual tourism and building up stronger relations.

"We are seeking to build a strategy with the Syrian government to enhance tourism marketing in Syria," Mr Nafouri commented.

He added that tourism is currently the third-largest sector in the Argentinean economy.

This comes after Cater Allen Private Bank revealed that a growing number of British consumers are looking at travelling to long-haul destinations including South America.
