Information on Alagoas

Alagoas is located in north east Brazil, where the majority of the country￿s property development is taking place. It￿s the smallest state in Brazil and the capital, Maceio, is a relaxed city with excellent beaches that attract many year-round tourists. Since colonial times, life in Alagoas has centred around its large plantations of sugar cane. However, tourism is playing an increasingly important role today and government incentives have been enticing private businesses, hotels and services to cater for tourists coming in search of the great climate and superb beaches. Besides the capital, Macei￿n important cluster of towns close to Pernambuco, such as Maragogi and Porto Calvo are today also attracting increasing numbers of tourists. A good infrastructure serves the state and the most important highway, the BR-101, cuts Alagoas from north to south, serving its major towns. The hydroelectric plant of Paulo Afonso, on the border between Alagoas, Bahia and Pernambuco, provides energy to Alagoas.
