The 9th Global Travel and Tourism Summit will take place in Brazil next year, it has been confirmed.

Florianopolis, the capital of Santa Catarina, is set to host the event on May 15th and 16th, the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) announced this week.

Brazil's national tourism organisation Embratur said the WTTC's decision was a reflection of the country's burgeoning reputation as an international tourist destination.

Head of Embratur Jeanine Pires pointed out that Brazil's tourism expenditure has increased by 58% so far this year.

Describing the nation as "one of the world's fastest growing tourism source markets", she added: "The trend is set to continue with receipts up more than 18% in the first half of 2008."

This year's Global Travel and Tourism Summit, entitled World Citizens, took place in Dubai in April.

More than 1,300 industry representatives travelled to the emirate, setting a new attendance record for the event.
