Cruise sector helping to boost Brazilian tourism

Brazil's ever-expanding tourism sector is set to be boosted further still by the arrival of cruise tourism, it has been suggested.

South America's cruise industry has had a record-breaking season, with six cruise lines operating 20 vessels and carrying almost 800,000 guests.

This can be combined with a recently released Economic Impact Study highlighting that the cruise sector is playing a significant part in Brazil's economy.

The research found that the industry contributed some $814 million in economic output during the 2010/11 cruise period.

Ray Withers, director of Property Frontiers, said: "Tourism has and will play a significant role in the growth of the Brazilian economy.

"Over 5.1 million foreign nationals visited Brazil in 2010, an impressive 7.8 per cent increase over 2009 figures and forecasts for 2011 are set to be even higher."

As such, Mr Withers supported recent comments from Pierfrancesco Vago, chief executive officer of MSC Cruises, which called for further action to improve the industry.

Brazil is the ‘perfect destination’ for a holiday home

As well as being one of the hottest emerging markets in the world, Brazil is also an ideal location for a holiday home, it has been suggested.

New government housing programmes combined with the forthcoming FIFA World Cup and Olympic Games mean that Brazil has been attracting a lot of interest from property investors of late.

However, agent UV10 has claimed that it is not just savvy investors who can make the most of what the country has to offer.

Samantha Gore, sales manager at the firm, explained that the north-eastern coastline surrounding Natal is one of the best holiday destinations.

"Prices are at their best now but on an upward trajectory, particularly as Natal's new airport takes shape," he said.

Indeed, work has begun on the new airport which is set to be the largest in Latin America. Once completed, the new facility will be able to accept five million passengers a year.

Research conducted by STR Global has found that countries like Brazil are experiencing a resurgence in interest from British travellers, compared to last year.

The latest tourism figures from Sao Paulo have provided further evidence of Brazil's growing popularity as an international holiday destination.

According to data from Sao Paulo Turismo, a total of 11 million people visited the city during 2008, with 1.7 million of that number coming from overseas.

The figure is Sao Paulo's highest ever annual tourism intake and represents an increase of 2.8% on last year's level, brazzilmag.com reports.

While Rio de Janeiro is arguably more famous for its tourist attractions, Sao Paulo is the largest city in Brazil and provides the South American country's main economic and financial centre.

The statistics reveal that 57.2% of foreign visitors travelled to the city for business last year, while 20.7% were visiting friends or relatives and 13.6 per cent arrived for leisure purposes.

Brazil is growing in stature as an investment location as well as a holiday hotspot, with homesgofast.com recently describing the property market as "well-positioned for 2009".

Transport links between the USA and Brazil are set to be enhanced before the end of the year, it has been confirmed.

According to American Airlines, new routes to the South American nation will be launched from Miami in November.

The carrier will offer direct passage from the Florida-based hub to destinations including Belo Horizonte, Salvador de Bahia and Recife.

Commenting on the move, Peter Dolara of American Airlines said he is excited about expanding into Brazil.

An official in the Brazilian aviation sector has said the South American nation's airports need to be improved before the FIFA 2014 World Cup.

The football tournament will be staged in cities such as Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, prompting a surge in the number of people flying into these regions.

Therefore, Adalberto Febeliano executive vice president of the Brazilian Association of General Aviation has said the existing transport network needs to be improved, AAP reports.

He said monthly passenger numbers could go up from four million to eight million by the time of the event, as people will be travelling across Brazil to watch different games.

"We need to modernise our airports and build new airports," Mr Febeliano commented.

"If we don't, when the World Cup arrives we won't have time to accommodate the passengers."

IATA reports increase in air passenger numbers

This year has seen an increase in the number of people boarding planes to travel overseas, new figures have revealed.

Statistics from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) showed that in October 2007, the amount of passengers was almost eight per cent higher than 12 months before.

An increase on a year-by-year-basis was also recorded, as the number of people flying across the world between January and November was 7.3 per cent up on the same period of 2006.

Much of the increase was centred on areas such as the Latin American countries, which suggests that countries such as Brazil are benefiting from the recent introduction of new flights from Europe.

Commenting on the figures, IATA said they showed that demand was "robust", despite economic problems in countries such as the US.

The body added: "Importantly, the credit crunch has yet to dampen demand."
