1.1 Rio de Janeiro
Rio is the old capital city and todayâ??s secret capital city of Brazil. It is said: â?In Sao Paulo they work, in Rio they live!â?? Rio is known for its beaches and mountains. The Sugar Loaf Mountain (Pao de Acucar, 390 m) is situated directly at the Guanabara Bay, the statue of Christ (Corcovado, 704) keeps watch over the town centre, just behind it the mountainous Tijuca forest extends.
1.2 Parque National da Tijuca
The national park Tijuca separates the northern (Zona Norte) from the southern (Zona Sul) districts of Rio. In the â??Zona Sulâ??, numerous districts and suburbs of Rio with high population density are located as well as the major part of the industries and the airport Galeao. The â??Zona Sulâ?? is the preferred residential area with the well known beaches Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, Gavea, Sao Conrado, Barra da Tijuca as well as Redreio dos Bandeirantes. The two last-named districts of town are growing rapidly, from Alto you can reach it quicker than from the town center. The Tijuca forest is the third most-important goal for tourists in Rio. It is legally protected and permanently watched. Some streets go through subtropical jungle (Mata Atlantica). A much visited attraction is the waterfall (Cascatinha). Some restaurants in the forest are popular destinations for tourists and locals seeking quietness. The Pico da Tijuca is 1022 m high, next to it are the Pedra do Conde (728 m), the Bico do Papagaio (980 m) and the Morro da Taquara.

Alto da Boa Vista is an old district of town at the pass of the Tijuca forest. The by far largest part is the legally protected park. The street over the pass connects the North with the South. At the pass itself are the two only public entrances to the Tijuca forest. In former times there was a sugar industry, a tram goes up to the entrance of the Tijuca forest. Today there is not much going on here. In the street are some shops for the locals and a few residential buildings, but no high-rise buildings.
