Sandanski is a town and a recreation centre in south-western Bulgaria, part of Blagoevgrad district. Named after Bulgarian revolutionary Yane Sandanski, it is located in a valley at the foot of Pirin Mountain, on both banks of the Sandanska Bistritsa River.
Sandanski's favourable position, suitable mild climate (with the highest average annual temperature in the country, +14,70°C) with almost no fog and the concentration of mineral water springs in the area are all reasons for the town's reputation as a centre for relaxation and recreation. The town boasts more sunshine hours than any other location in Bulgaria. At 66 %, relative humidity is low, while annual sunshine duration is more than 2500 hours.
The spa town is a quiet one with population of about 32 000 people. One hour drive will take you to the golden beaches of the Aegean Sea. Located at 224 meters above sea level, it is situated at the foot of Pirin Mountain, most of which is included in Pirin National Park. There are more than 200 lakes and 1300 plant species in the mountain.
The port of Thessaloniki, the second largest city of Greece, is about one hour away from here, Sofia - the capital of Bulgaria is two hours and a half by car or train. Both of them have airports with very attractive flights to many world destinations. About 120 kilometers is the distance to Thessaloniki Aiport.
In the town of Sandanski is found the unique park called Sveti Vrach. On territory of 344 000 sq.m. more than 200 Mediterranean plants and trees flourish, some of which are natural landmarks. The park gives an excellent opportunity for rest and recreation.
24 km away, south-east of the town is situated the town of Melnik (famous with its wines and sand-bars), and 6 more kilometers away and youâ??ll find the Monastery of Rozhen. Sandanski is about 70 km away from the preferred ski runs in Bansko.
