The property is situated in the charming town of Harmanli and 33km away from the beautiful town of Haskovo. It is a wonderful region near a mountain and the beautiful River Maritsa, rising from Western Rhodope Mountains southeast of the Bulgarian capital Sofia, it flows east and southeast across Bulgaria, briefly forms the Bulgaria-Greece border, and then runs along the Greece-Turkey border. At Edirne it changes direction, flowing southwest to enter the Aegean Sea after a course of 480km. The Maritsa is suitable for fishing and a great place for a holiday.
The house is situated in friendly neighborhood in the wider centre of Harmanli, which gets its name from the threshing mills (harman) that once abounded on the surrounding plain, nowadays given to growing cotton, mulberries (for silkworms) and tobacco. The chunky caravanserai wall dates from the C16 like the town itself, whose Turkish founders also constructed the hump-backed Garbav Bridge with its typically flowery dedication:
“As a token of his gratitude to God the Grand Vizier ordered an arch like a rainbow to be built over the River Harmanli (a tributary of the Maritsa)… and alleviated rich and poor alike from their sorrows. The world is a bridge which is crossed by both king and pauper.”
Harmanli is a very well-developed business centre too favoured by its strategic location on the main route to Turkey and the Near and Middle East.
