The town of Shipka was established 630 years ago in order to protect and support the pass of the same name. The hills were overgrown with dog-roses, from where the name of the town comes – Shipka meana a dog rose.
One of the most important battles for the liberation of Bulgaria took place on the peak of Shipka.
The houses in Shipka are more than 130 years old. A part of the main occupations is still preserved: cutlery, carpentry, sword production. The town of Shipka is famous for the high buttery sheep’s milk. Strawberries, apples and herbs grow well there.
The Memorial “Birth of Christ” was built near the town of Shipka. It is devoted to those Russian soldiers and volunteers who lost their lives in the battle for Bulgarian freedom.
