The climate is temperate continental with a characteristic southern warm windand. It is also 32 km south of the regional town centre of Pazardjik which has all modern amenities available. The nearest airport is at the city of Plovdiv - one hour’ driving and the major one is in the capital of Sofia with less than 2 hours’ of driving. The “Horizon” complex is conveniently located next to the ski slope and just some minutes away from the lake Batak. The mineral spa centers in Velingrad are just 20 minutes’ drive away. There is easy access to highway for Greece and Aegean Sea. The town of Batak itself is a municipality centre and in the Late Middle Ages it used to be a big flourishing settlement. It was burnt to the ground at the time of the kurdjalii invasions in the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century. During the April Uprising of 1876 the whole population takes up arms. During the regular Turkish army and bashi-bazouk crushes the heroic resistance of the people, the town is burnt down and the major part of local population is massacred. In St. Nedelya Church (built in 1813) the Turks slaughter about 3000 people (among them women, children and old people), who sought refuge behind the thick stone walls. Today Batak is a renovated modern town famous for its historical monuments and a resort and tourist centre. The town museum of history is located in a new building and houses over 500 exhibits of the history of this historical landmark. The several old Batak houses restored and proclaimed as cultural monuments are of interest, too. The town is connected with the remaining part of the country through bus transport. There are regular bus lines to Sofia, Plovdiv, Peshtera, Pazardzhik, Velingrad, Dospat and other smaller settlements within the region. Batak Dam Lake, which was turned into a recreation and sports zone spreads out at the distance of 3 km north-west of the town. The dam-lake offers superb opportunities for camping sites, water tourism, fishing, water sports, hiking, and recreation. The Tsigov Chark Resort offering greater opportunities for accommodation and entertainment than the town itself is situated on the south-west bank of the dam at the distance of about 8 km west of Batak. The four dam lakes is another magnificent site for recreation, sports and tourism: Golyam Beglik dam - the biggest one, Shiroka Polyana Dam (Wide Meadow) - the most scenic one, Beglika Dam - the smallest one and Toshkov Chark Dam. They are located along the road Batak - Dospat (51 km), in the middle of the distance, amongst the ravishing Rhodope countryside.
