Maio is a very peaceful island with a population of only 6,000. The island boasts sweeping, nearly deserted beaches and desert-like landscapes, interspersed with small oases. The capital of the island, Vila Do Maio boasts a magnificent Baroque church and is a quiet town with donkeys, coconut palms and pastel painted houses. Maio´s main tourist appeal is its splendid sand dunes and beaches that are the longest of the Cape Verde islands. The island attracts visitors looking for a retreat off the beaten track while many of its beaches can only be accessed via jeep.
