Cape Verde is hoping that a multi-million pound investment in five new golf resorts will help to give tourism in the area a welcome boost and draw new investors to the area.

Three times major winner Ernie Els and six times major winner Nick Faldo will help to design the new golf resorts as part of a £1.75 billion project to establish the region as a new world golf destination.

The Island of Sal with its international airport looks set to be the host of two of the new 18-hole championship standard courses both designed by Ernie Els, while an aquapark, and a marina capable of accommodating superyachts will also be constructed.

According to the latest official statistics, tourism in the region, an archipelago consisting of ten islands and eight islets in the Atlantic Ocean, is growing at a rate of 22 per cent per year, helped by improved accessibility and direct five and a half hour flights from the UK.

Carley Todd, GEM Estates' Cape Verde expert, said: "Cape Verde has all-year-round holiday appeal and since it has been 'discovered' by the global tourist, has come on in leaps and bounds in the popularity stakes.

"It is projected that Cape Verde will reach one million tourists annually by 2015, from just 83,259 in the year 2000, and golf will play a pivotal role in this success story.

The news follows reports that Cape Verde has signed a deal with Portugal to help education, health and to fight poverty.
