The number of holidaymakers choosing to visit Cape Verde is set to increase significantly, an official has predicted.

Speaking at a press conference, Victor Fidalgo of Cabo Verde Investimentos stated that this year's total number of visitors could come to about 320,000.

Furthermore, he was quoted by Cabo Verde 24 as saying that in the next four to five years, this number could rise even higher.

Mr Fidalgo told journalists that the island was growing in popularity all over the world and had the potential to attract about 500,000 visitors a year by 2012.

If tourist numbers do increase in line with predictions, this would be likely to result in increased demand for holiday accommodation in Cape Verde.

Last month, the national airline TACV launched a direct flight between Santiago Island and Stansted Airport in the UK.

According to the carrier, the service was introduced in response to growing demand from tourists and second home owners.
