Cape Verde's competitiveness could be in for a boost following the launch of a new scheme, which may interest those considering overseas property investment in the country.

Macauhub reports that the United Nations Industrial Development Program has established the Quality for West Africa programme in order to integrate Cape Verde into the world economy.

Those considering an investment in the country may be aware that it joined the World Trade Organisation recently. The BBC also indicates that the nation's tourism continues to grow.

Jose Brito, Cape Verde's minister for the economy, growth and competition, said: "There is a tendency these days, to standardise products in terms of quality and for Cape Verde to win that battle of competitiveness and be able to export, we have to meet those standards."

Lonely Planet describes Cape Verde as having "pleasant" weather throughout the year, which may prove to be an attraction for people looking to invest in property outside of the UK.

There are a broad range of different types of property developments coming to the market in Cape Verde, it has been claimed.

Paul Collins, overseas property editor for BuyAssociation, said that buildings "can differ" between the islands.

"There is a range of stuff going up and most are purpose built developments," he remarked.

Investors will be able to invest in beach resorts and golf developments, as well as properties aimed at the eco-tourism market, Mr Collins stated.

According to the expert, people are likely to become more concerned about their carbon footprints and look to invest in properties that "look after the environment".

Commenting on the Cape Verde market earlier in the year, Mr Collins said that last summer was the first season where direct flights from the UK to the islands were available.

Anyone considering purchasing a property there is expected to "benefit" as the number of visitors to the regions increases over the next few years.

Cape Verde property owners 'to benefit from investment'

Major investment by foreign consortiums on the Cape Verde islands is likely to directly benefit overseas property owners.

Although some of the money is being ploughed into the construction of new hotels, the wider population, including tourists and investors, will be able to take advantage of the associated infrastructure improvements.

Foreign consortiums are investing in Cape Verde to cash in on its emergence as a popular holiday location and possible attract more tourists to the region.

Some of the money is being invested in new power generation systems, while many people will be able to reap the benefits of an improved road network, reports Macau Hub.

Meanwhile, the overseas investment is likely to have a positive impact on the more run-down parts of Cape Verde, as it could trigger regeneration and possibly tourism in hitherto overlooked places.

The report comes shortly after Emerging Real Estate said that it had "huge expectations" for the property market in Cape Verde, due to its appeal among investors.

New airline route boosts Cape Verde popularity

Holidaymakers are flying to Cape Verde rather than similar locations thanks to a cut in the flight time, according to new figures.

Jet2Let statistics, Sambalad Development said, showed that the direct flight from London Gatwick to Cape Verde, which took 5.5 hours, was more preferable to tourists than the 13.5 hour trip to the Maldives.

There was a 26.6 per cent increase in tourism in Cape Verde last year, according to the National Statistics Institute.

Jenny Adams from tour operator The Cape Verde Experience said that direct flights had fuelled more interest from the UK.

"The UK population is now discovering the appeal of this unique archipelago, and there has been a buzz about the islands for the last year, as Cape Verde continues to be the must-visit destination," he said.

Cape Verde is set to benefit from a series of developments on the islands of Sal and Sao Vicente over the next few moths, such as at beach properties near Dunas beach resort.

These will include a golf and leisure complex, pools and a gym.

Cape Verde to Build Largest Road on Archipelago

Last month, the government of Cape Verde announced its decision to launch an international tender for the construction of the archipelago's largest road, the Fogo Island ring road.

The Cape Verdean Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and the Sea, Manuel Inocencio, told the daily newspaper, A Semana, the tender will be launched and granted during the first half of next year, with a view to commencing work by September 2007 and with completion before the deadline of 30 months.

According to officials, the project is valued at 3 billion Cape Verdean escudos (US$34.3 million).

Inocencio stresses the ring road will be a driving force behind economic development on Fogo Island. Property investors are viewing the project with interest as it will bring with it upgraded conditions for tourism and transport in general, as well as improve road safety for passengers and cargo.

According to figures from Cape Verde’s national statistics institute (macauhub), Cape Verde's hotels welcomed 233,000 tourists last year, 26.4 per cent more than during the previous year, with Sal Island becoming even more popular as the main tourist hub of the islands.

Foreign direct investment (FDI) in Cape Verde last year also focused on the tourist economy, investing a total of US$250 million into the sector.

This month, measures have been drawn up by the Directorate-General for Tourism Development in Cape Verde to create a Code of Conduct to establish sustainable tourism. This will be presented on 27 September 2006 on World Tourism Day. The Code of Conduct will define objectives for managing resources and establishing competitiveness within the tourism sector. Included in these proposals are measures for saving and re-using water, managing power resources, implementing renewable energy as well as optimising environmental resources and waste treatment methods.

This development in the tourism sector is now key to the strength of Cape Verde’s growing economy today. While a healthy tourist market is vital for property investment in many emerging markets such as Cape Verde, all indications show Cape Verde still represents a good investment in a booming market.
