The tourist trade in Cyprus may be set for a boost from a new celebrity-fronted marketing drive.

According to the Financial Mirror, tennis star Marcos Baghdatis is to feature heavily in promotional literature and adverts aimed at foreign consumers.

The former Wimbledon semi-finalist and Australian Open runner-up has been recruited by the Cyprus Tourist Organisation (CTO) to take part in the initiative.

It is hoped that his international celebrity could encourage more people to consider the Mediterranean island as a good place to visit.

Commenting on the move, the CTO said the cooperation with Baghdatis was intended to use his worldwide fame in the best possible way.

His image will feature in both online and print advertisements, while he will also participate in tourist fairs overseas.

Baghdatis was born in Limassol in 1985 and is currently ranked 15th in the world.
