The Area

A quick stroll down one of the elegant tree-lined residential streets
in the desirable neighborhood of Vinohrady and it's evident that this quarter is clearly one of Prague's treasures. A colorful array of lovingly restored buildings from the turn of the century sits grandly next to lush parks and creates the feeling of old world splendor. Much of today's modern Vinohrady was once
covered in sloping vineyards planted under King Charles IV in the 14th century, thus giving the district its name, Vinohrady, literally meaning vineyards in English. Under the Austrian Hungarian Empire, palaces and rose gardens replaced the vineyards, and Royal Vinohrady, as the area came to be known, enjoyed its status as a private autonomous district and home to Prague's elite. Many famous residents made their home in Vinohrady, using the neighborhood's leafy parks as inspiration for their creations or as backdrops for their writing and paintings. At the turn of the century, the peaceful neighborhood was incorporated into the city and became unifi ed with greater Prague.
The Communists withdrew the royal title of the district in 1960 as a means of controlling the predominately bourgeois class that inhabited Vinohrady. Today, Vinohrady is a vibrant quarter with stylish coffeehouses, trendy bistros,gourmet food shops, galleries and boutiques.
