Crime And Police In The Dominican Republic

Safety is a concern to homebuyers in any foreign country and it is important to be aware of what to expect in terms of crime when considering an investment in the Dominican Republic.

As is the case the world over, cities are the most prone to crime situations and the Dominican Republic makes no exception. Typical crimes consist of petty theft, robbery or the occasional mugging, most of which is limited to Santo Domingo. Violent crime against foreigners is virtually non-existent and, provided you use some common-sense and keep aware of your surroundings, your stay should be safe and problem-free.

  • Don’t leave valuables unattended in parked cars or with open windows while driving in the city
  • Don’t wear valuable jewellery
  • Keep your homes locked when you are out, or sleeping as burglaries do happen
  • Carry mobile phones in an inside pocket, rather than on your belt or in a bag.
  • Be aware of bag snatchers in the form of motorcycle riders, slowing down at pedestrians and driving off again
  • Travel in groups, particularly at night
  • Watch out for fake policemen – all police should wear a name tag with their last name on it

The police force varies somewhat in its standards of professionalism and you may find that some officers will accept bribes or even use undue force if they so wish. With a past history of some violent political demonstrations, the police force is well prepared for riots; however, political demonstrations do not generally occur in the vicinity of resort areas and are never targeted at foreigners.

The Tourist Police

This is a public institution named Politur and is run by the National Police, Secretary of Armed Forces and the Secretary of Tourism. Politur takes care of tourist areas, assisting visitors in reporting crime and giving them any further assistance if necessary. The police headquarters is located in Santo Domingo, tel: 809 686 8636.
