Although the Dominican Republic is working at supplying adequate healthcare, for now foreigners are limited to a basic level of service. Find out more below.

In Santo Domingo you will generally find the best medical care to be found in the country but the quality of facilities varies widely and foreigners are well advised to take out their own private insurance in the event of needing healthcare. Many medical facilities throughout the Dominican Republic do not have English speaking staff, so some knowledge of Spanish would be essential.

Should you need emergency help, dial 911. A private ambulance service, ProMed, also operates in the cities of Santo Domingo, Santiago, La Romana and Puerto Plata. Tel: 809 548 7200. ProMed requires payment up-front at the time of transport.

Bottled water is the only water to drink as tap water is unsafe.
