People buying property abroad can benefit from having learned some of the native tongue, according to one expert.
Elie Barbeau, office manager at Association Integration Kreizh Briezh (AIKB), an organisation that aims to help newcomers to Brittany settle into their new life and community, said that expats with a grasp of French have a head start when buying a property in the country.
Some foreign property companies "are not very fair with foreigners" since their sole aim is to make money, she explained.
Ms Barbeau admitted that "most serious" property companies have English-speaking staff, however.
She pointed out that a number of private schools and associations such as Kreizh Briezh offer French classes.
Some 200,000 Brits are living in France permanently, according to the latest figures from the Institute for Public Policy Research.
It estimates that one in five British pensioners will retire overseas by 2050.
Research from 2006 revealed that one in twelve British pensioners now live abroad.
