It is one of the largest Ski areas in France, with a Ski piste area of 265km, a reliable snow record and a lack of lift queues. The village is about 700m high with two lifts from the village to the ski areas. Samoens is set amid forest and is listed in France as a "Historic Monument", as it still retains an ancient church, medieval fountains and rustic old buildings.
