Mitte was a borough in East Berlin, prior to the reunification of Germany in the early 90's. Mitte means centre in German, and when they re-organised the Berlin boroughs in 2001, the once West Berlin boroughs of Tiergarten and Wedding were merged with Mitte and became what is now the main borough of Mitte spanning right across the very heart of Berlin.
The borough of Tiergarten, which means animal park in German, is best known for its large green park, and the many important government buildings, including the residence of the German President, Schloss Bellevue. They are also building the new Federal Ministry of the Interior in Moabit Tiergarten.
