Improvements to European rail networks mean that more people could use the train to visit Italy's skiing destinations this winter, it has emerged.
The Observer's Daniel Elkan has described his recent experience of travelling by train to the Italian resort of Sauze d'Oulx, thereby avoiding the hassle of airport queues and significantly reducing the carbon emissions of his journey.
Challenging a friend to make the same journey - London to Sauze - by plane, Mr Elkan took a Eurostar to Paris before changing on to a train bound for the Italian peaks.
Although the flyer's trip turned out to be "20% quicker" than that of the Observer writer, he believes that his train "trounced the plane" in terms of "convenience and quality".
"The flight times, as with many ski charters, were grim, whereas the train trip started at a reasonable hour but still arrived in perfect time," Mr Elkan explained.
Last month, the Telegraph praised the "stunning" scenery of Italian ski resorts such as Madonna di Campiglio.
