Historical Notes:
From its origins to the Middle Ages
It is in the opinion of Calabrian historians that Montepaone arose on the ruins of Aurunco. It is said that it was located in today Montepaone Runci’s Contrada (quarter), halfway between the current center and Montepaone Lido; here are the ancient ruins of the monastery of St. Nicholas.
It is not known with certainty which is the Aurunco foundation date, but some hypotheses are formulated by the people who want Aurunco founded by Aurinci’s people arrived up to here from Lazio region (Rome), and who settled in the plain between Pietragrande and Montepaone Lido, next to the plain of Sanguinario or Sajnaro (adjacent to the south, with the Beltrame torrent). Here they fought, in a bloody battle, Hannibal and the Roman consuls Marcus Claudius Marcellus and Titus Quinzio Crispino during the Second Punic War.
The historian Giovanni Dominico Tassone brings us news of a document which speaks of the assets allocated to the Charterhouse of Serra San Bruno and stated that:
"That house, which is the land of Monte Pavone (Peacock Mount), once Arunco, was given in succession and that the people later moved to a higher place to guard against incursions of the Turks".
We have other witnesses by the writings of the Capuchin historian Giovanni Fiore from Cropani who writes: "An old man, which boasted one hundred years of age, made a deposition to the Royal Treasury in which he stated that the actual Montepaone was the old Arunco".
Montepaone with its current name started to get a notice from the 1094, when Count Ruggero the the Norman made over, to San Bruno charterhouse, three villages: Arunco, the today's Montepaone, Olibano, today’s Gasperina and Montauro.
From now on you will always hear of Montepaone no more of Aurunco or Monte Pavone (Mount Peacock).
Interesting, to determine the veracity of the story of Hannibal, may be the discovery, in October 1951, after a flood, into a chasm opened up in the Grizzo river bed, of a large jar of clay containing a human skull belonging to an important man, killed in battle and decorated military honor. Historians of the period thought that the skull was that of the Roman consul Marcellus.
Of course it is difficult to determine what the truth is in all respects, but we know that the Roman soldiers called the river “Grizzo Milites” (soldiers) because here were killed many of their comrades. Who knows if among these there was also the consul Marcellus?.
A Montepaone Lido is still today present, in the former SS 106 road, part of a column that shows the battle took place.
Modern era
In 1594 Montepaone suffered a raid by the Saracens at he orders of Sinan Bascià Cicala who, once converted to Islam, began to fire and sword many countries on the Ionian Mediterranean coast. It is said that the Saracens, in addition to commit looting and destroying everything, stole the bell of the church, but, when the ship set sail, it sank a few hundred meters from the shore.
