Castle Description
Location
Il Castello della Terra Insigne (– meaning “The Castle of the Great Land” – this is the name that Pope Paul III gave to the village where the building is located, in 1543) is a very charming historic building, spread over four levels and has a characteristic tower with loggia.
The house, which has been restructured, has two separate entrances. At present, it is divided into two apartments, with two kitchens, large living areas, seven bedrooms, four bathrooms and numerous other rooms serving the property.
We are on Umbrian territory, just a few kilometres from the Tuscan border. We are only 15 minutes by car from Lake Trasimeno and in a convenient position for getting to several important historic towns of central Italy, including Città della Pieve (21 km), Castiglion del Lago (14 km), Chiusi (18 km) and Cetona (23 km), which can be reached in less than half an hour, while it takes just a few more minutes to reach Chianciano terme (30 km), Perugia (31 km) and Montepulciano (40 km).
The village, perched on a hill overlooking Lake Trasimeno, still retains the typical architecture of a medieval castle. It was once surrounded by a moat and a plan of the village in concentric circles, used as a defensive structure, allowing it to withstand numerous sieges over the centuries.
Florence is just an hour and a half by car from here (136 km) and Rome is about 2 hours away (162 km).
The nearest airport is that of Perugia S. Egidio (42 km), while that of Florence is 152 km away, Rome Ciampino 179 km and Rome Fiumicino 207 km.
Description of the buildings
The building, dating back to the XV century, is spread over several levels and is characterized by two original period towers, one square and one round.
On the ground floor, which is mostly used as basement/storage rooms and a garage, is the main entrance with stone steps that lead to the upper floors.
There is a large living room on the first floor, as well as some utility rooms, which are part of the main apartment and are on one side of the building. On the other side is an apartment, which also has a separate entrance and consists of a large kitchen, with two bedrooms and a bathroom.
On the second floor, the main apartment is divided into a lounge, large kitchen, a vaulted living room with a fireplace, the master bedroom in the round tower with an en suite bathroom, the other bedroom, also with a bathroom, and large landing areas. This floor is connected to the top floor by a lift.
On the third floor there is a lounge, as well as a large living room with a fireplace, which leads to two bedrooms, the master bedroom – in the round tower – with a wardrobe, a bathroom and a large space with a wooden staircase that leads to the square tower.
The tower consists of a room that opens as a mezzanine over the lower area and a beautiful loggia outside, with a view of the valley and Lake Trasimeno.
The fourth floor consists of the attics, four large rooms, with characteristic pavements in terracotta and large wooden beams.

Condition
The property is in excellent condition.
It has been restructured maintaining the original architectural features and still conveys great charm:
the main entrances, with ancient doorways, the internal staircase in “pietra serena” (a type of sandstone), decorated doors, vaulted sitting room, exposed beams and large windows, all take us back through the centuries letting us imagine the atmosphere of the past.
