Crime And Police In Malta

Malta is generally safe; in fact the main health risk is the fierce sun in the summer which can burn the unsuspected visitor. The island is considered as one of the safest in the world with little in the way of violent crime or political disturbances. Most violence cases are in fact domestic.

The Maltese have a reputation of being the most friendly and helpful nation in the world as well as being the most optimistic and happy.

The Malta Police Force is one of the oldest police forces in Europe. The Malta Police have a mixed responsibility in respect of its investigative role and national security. In the investigative role the Malta Police Force is legally bound to act upon the receipt of any information, report or complaint, and decide the respective natures of such information in order to treat accordingly. Law enforcement in Malta is the responsibility of the police. The police force is made up of over 1700 persons and divided into 12 districts with three sub-departments of the Crime Investigation Department assisting with serious crimes, drug-related crimes and financial crimes.
