Morocco attracts foreign visitors

A growing number of British people are choosing to take their holidays in Morocco, it has been revealed.

According to analysts at Mintel, current exchange rates in Europe are putting many consumers off travelling within the eurozone.

Therefore, many are heading further afield and take advantage of more favourable rates in places such as Morocco.

Richard Cope, senior travel analyst at Mintel, told the Guardian that factors such as the good transport links have also made the north African country a popular choice.

He commented: "Prices will rise for 2009, meaning people will look increasingly at countries outside the eurozone."

Mr Cope added that consumers are becoming increasingly "competitive" with regards to their holidays, which means some may find traditional destinations "old-hat".

Morocco attracted a record number of people last year, as about 7.4 million tourists chose to visit places such as Marrakesh and Tangier.

The government is currently aiming to boost annual visitor numbers to 10 million by 2010.
Strong euro influences holiday choices

The value of the pound against the euro is directly affecting people's travel habits, it has been revealed.

According to Directholidaybookings.co.uk, the strength of the single currency has put people off travelling to traditional European destinations.

This has led to many people seeking alternative options beyond the continent, such as Egypt and Morocco.

The two African nations were said to offer far more favourable exchange rates with the UK, which means holidaymakers could find they offer better value for money.

Andrew Gibson, director of DirectHolidaybookings.co.uk, commented: "British tourists are finding that their money will go much further if they consider alternative locations."

He added that the cost of visiting established hotspots such as Spain and France has risen "significantly" in the last few months.

This comes after the Association of British Travel Agents revealed that emerging economies and mid to long-haul destinations are becoming more and more popular.
Foreign property investors urged to plan finances

People who have invested in foreign property have been urged to plan their spending carefully this year.

Currency specialist HiFX warned that many investors were unnecessarily wasting money because they had not made preparations in advance.

For example, it stated that second home owners who booked flights abroad at the last minute were often missing out on cheaper deals that had been available earlier on.

Mark Bodega, director of HiFX, commented: "Many airlines, particularly the low-cost carriers, have a January sale which include some great deals for the more organised owner."

He added that owners of property in emerging markets would benefit from shopping around for cheaper home insurance, particularly in places such as Morocco, Cape Verde and Dubai.

Mr Bodega stated that many insurance brokers had responded to the growing demand for homes in these markets by widening the terms of their cover policies.

This comes after Vanessa Bird of financial services company Baydonhill predicted that more exotic locations would grow in popularity this year.
