Morocco prepared for tourism boom despite global economic slowdown

Morocco's tourism minister is confident that the global economic turmoil will not impact negatively on perceptions of the north African country as a viable holiday location, it has been revealed.

Indeed, in an interview with Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa, Mohammed Boussaid suggested that the financial meltdown might even be of benefit to Morocco.

"I am convinced that our country can profit from the current economic crisis," he told the news provider.

He based this positive outlook on Morocco's proximity to Europe and the fact that travel to the country had become easier.

Mr Boussaid said he expected European travellers to choose locations closer to home given their budgetary constraints - but that Morocco was still well within reach.

This suggests that property investment in the country could be profitable as demand for rented accommodation from tourists is likely to remain high.

Figures released by Morocco's tourism ministry show six per cent more tourists visited the country in the first ten months of this year than they did in 2007.

Morocco has strong ties with Europe and celebrated the 50th anniversary of its independence from France in 2006.
