In a move that could help increase interest in Algarve tourism and consequently the region's property market, it has been revealed that a Formula One test event will be held at the Portuguese region's new motor racing track.
Formula One has confirmed that the Autodromo Internacional will stage the event in mid-December, making use of facilities such as the sprinkler system designed to replicate wet racing conditions.
Teams whose participation have been confirmed include Honda and McLaren, the latter being the team of Britain's world championship leader Lewis Hamilton, who is just one race away from becoming the champion.
Such an event could help raise the profile of the area, particularly among motorsport fans, who can also see events such as motorcycling at the course.
Another sporting attraction that can attract tourists to the Algarve is golf.
It has been confirmed that the European Tour's PGA Portugal Masters event, which was staged this month at the Oceanico course in Vilamoura, will take place at the same venue next year.
