EU countries will be able to get financial help to make housing greener after a decision in the European parliament.
MEPs voted 629 to 17 to approve a report concerning a directive which will make money available via the Regional Development Fund to help countries provide more energy efficiency measures and renewable energy in housing.
Such money could be applied for by any country, with Portugal being one possible recipient.
Those keen on green property in the country may be interested by the fact that it is already sourcing much of its energy from renewable sources, including some pioneering methods of generating power.
Among these is the Agucadoura wave farm off the northern coast, the world's first multi-unit installation of its kind.
The Pelamis devices currently have a generating capacity of 2.25 MW and there are plans to add an extra 20 MW of capacity.
