Madeira 'emerging as popular destination'

The Portuguese island of Madeira has been described as a popular sector in the country's holiday market.

Speaking about the Atlantic location to the Independent, Bernard Hornung, the sales director of the Azulara development - which is currently under construction - stated that most visitors prefer to stay in and around the capital city of Funchal.

He explained this is "not only because they prefer to be within easy reach of the sea but because this side of the island gets the most sun".

However, Funchal is not overdeveloped in the way some locations are, Connie Vitto of Quadrant Overseas told the paper, because local planning laws prevent a "glut" of new building taking place.

The Independent said the attractions that may bring property buyers to the island include its sub-tropical climate, golf courses and lush scenery.

Notable Madeirans include fashion designer Fatima Lopes and footballer Cristiano Ronaldo.
