The Romanian parliament has given the green light to a new project to build an airport for the city of Brasov.

Romania's Chamber of Deputies voted for the new transport hub to serve the location, which is 166km from Bucharest, Balkantarvellers.com reports.

Being located in the heart of the country, Brasov offers manageable travelling distances to the Black Sea, the Carpathian mountains and southern Transylvania, the site noted, factors that may interest those thinking of buying property in the country, not least to rent to tourists.

One local attraction is Bran Castle, often mistaken for the home of Vlad the Impaler by Dracula fans.

Romania's National Real Estate Fair last week saw many bargains on offer as developers sought to increase discounts to attract buyers, standard.ro reported.

Prices were dropped by between 20 and 30 per cent, with other incentives such as free parking spaces and furniture among the extras being offered.

The region of Transylvania is likely to attract some of the world's more adventurous tourists this year, according to the Independent.

Although this area of Romania remains most famous for being the home of Count Dracula, the newspaper found that it also has much to offer holidaymakers who enjoy heading off the beaten track.

Visitors to Transylvania will find a "beautiful, unspoilt landscape", spectacular medieval castles and affordable ski resorts.

Indeed, the variety of attractions on offer in Transylvania caused the Independent to conclude that "this complex and exciting region makes a superb holiday destination".

Visitors to Transylvania may find themselves captivated by their surroundings to the extent that they purchase a property in the region, as Prince Charles reportedly did.

The prince is said to own a house in the village of Viscri and makes regular visits to the area.

Traian Badulescu of Romanian tourist association ANAT recently said that the country's tourism sector is expected to continue its "upward path" in 2009.
British holiday drivers choosing Romania

Romania is an increasingly popular destination for UK holidaymakers, according to new statistics.

Vehicle rental company easyCar.com reports that the number of rentals it organises in the country has risen by 540% over the past year – the largest increase in any European nation.

The firm conducted a survey which found that 45% of people are not putting their holiday plans on hold, despite the economic downturn.

Instead, many holidaymakers are opting for more budget-friendly destinations in eastern Europe, such as Romania.

"While the credit crunch is indeed causing people to think more about how they are spending, it's not dampening the nation's holiday spirit," commented Bill Jones, chief executive officer of easyCar.com.

"Instead of seeing customers stall their plans to go away, they're opting for locations that will make their money go further."

The Guardian travel blog recently identified Romania's Carpathian Mountains as a tourist attraction which is set to attract more visitors in the next few years.
Wizz Air expands in Romania

Low-cost airline Wizz Air has confirmed that will open up a new base in Romania next year.

The carrier's new facility will be situated in Timisoara and will handle a number of new routes across mainland Europe.

This will include services to Rome, Milan, Venice and Dortmund, as well as London, Barcelona and Paris.

As a result, Romania will be far more easily accessible to leisure and business travellers, which could in turn make it an attractive market for foreign property investors to consider.

Marian Chivu, operational director at Timisoara Airport, commented: "Our aim is the constant growth in terms of passenger numbers, and route development inside and also outside the European Union."

John Stephenson, chief commercial officer at Wizz Air, added that the move demonstrates the carrier's commitment to serving the Romanian market.

This comes after Ziarul Financiar revealed that tourist numbers in Romania increased by more than a quarter to 7.7 million last year.

Speaking after the release of the figures, the government said it was optimistic that this trend would continue during the next 12 months at least.

If you want to look for the busiest traffic spot in Bucharest, with a flyover, lots of heavy traffic, crowded ring road, even a railroad, and queues stretching for miles, there’s one place to go: the Otopeni bridge. With a flyover that is part of the busiest road in Romania (DN1 – national road 1)...
