Frequently Asked Questions - South Africa

Wherever purchasers choose for their ideal overseas property location, there are always questions raised about the country in which they wish to invest. Here we have gathered some buyers’ most common queries to give you an initial idea of South Africa as a property destination.

Can foreign nationals own property in South Africa?

No restrictions are in place on foreign nationals owning property in South Africa. In fact the government is keen to see this market grow to stimulate the economy.

Why should I choose South Africa?

South Africa has much to offer the property purchaser in terms of location, cultural and climatic diversity as well as superb outdoor lifestyle. It has a well-regulated and open property market in which buyers can be secure about the title of their land. In addition, by way of an incentive to foreign investors, substantial taxation breaks are in place, such as up to a 20% reduction for real estate developers.

Capital growth figures are very encouraging in certain areas and, in the Western Cape last year’s average was approximately 15.6% per annum. Indeed the commercial property market is out-performing that of many Western countries while the shortage of affordable housing in metropolitan areas is fuelling a healthy rental demand.

Finally, the low rate of exchange allows you to buy more for your Rand than in other major world currencies.

What is the economic and political situation?

Growing out of the ashes of apartheid South Africa is still a country balanced between the third and first world with some problems still to overcome. However the strong stand taken by Nelson Mandela when he was set free to endorse democracy has set the solid political pattern for South Africa today.

How do we travel to South Africa?

Flights to South Africa are available from every major capital in Europe and arrive at Cape Town and Johannesburg daily. Budget flights are increasingly available and today you can fly for as little as 299 GBP with Globespan. Other low cost fares can be purchased from Air Namibia and South African Airlines such as Kulula and 1time.

Once in South Africa there is an excellent local airline, train and road system to get you to your final destination.

What is the direct flying time from UK to South Africa?

The direct flying time from London Heathrow to Johannesburg is approximately 12 hours and to Cape Town 14 hours. Remember that from the UK and Europe there is only a one or two hour time difference and consequently no jet lag.

Is a visa required to enter South Africa?

European Union citizens do not need visas to enter South Africa provided they do not intend to stay for more than 90 days. Visitors from the USA and some South American countries do need visas for stays longer than 30 days.
