The Area Vera is located some five miles inland and is regarded as one of the most important towns in the area. The main square, the Plaza Mayor, is well worth a visit and is home to many interesting buildings including the Santa María de la Encarnación church, built in 1520. Shopping here is a delight and you can find many local handicrafts. Every Saturday there is a large street market. There are many eating options to chose from, from simple tapas bars to good quality restaurants. Down by the beach is the water park, and on the outskirts of town is the famous Valle de Este golf course.
The town of Vera can trace its history back to Neolithic times with Bronze Age relics found within the area dating back 6,000 years. The area owed its popularity originally to the discovery of rich deposits of silver and tin which were exploited by its earliest inhabitants. Since then the area has passed through the hands of almost all the settlers that came to the peninsular. The Carthaginians founded the town of Baria in the 6th century BC; the Romans took over from the Carthaginians and left a wealth of archaeological remains. The Moors moved the town inland the better to protect itself from attack from the Christian armies. Vera was so strategically important to the Moors that the Catholic king Fernando felt it necessary to overthrow the town on his way to Granada and in 1488 the town was ceded to the Christian armies.
In 1518 an extremely violent earthquake destroyed the old town and reconstruction was moved closer to the coast. Queen Isabela climbed to the top of a hill and fired an arrow and ordered that wherever it landed Vera was to be built. The town was originally built in the urban renaissance style and was enclosed within town walls with eight towers, battlements and archer windows. The town church was built in the centre which served as a fort for the inhabitants in times of war. More recently the discovery of a further seam of silver led to an expansion of the mining industry which only ended in the mid 20th century. It was then that the growth in the tourist industry led to a significant increase in construction on the coastline of Vera.
With wide open beaches, bars, restaurants, hotels, shops, and facilities opening constantly this is very much the area of the future. It also boasts the only water park in the region - the parque acuatico. Here you can take a ride on one of the many thrilling enclosed or open flumes or sit by one of the three pools. There is a dedicated children"s area with play area and pool and their own rides. There are three golf courses within easy drive, including Desert Springs which was the first desert course on mainland Europe.
