As American tourists look to make their weak dollar go further in Europe they are seeking out cheaper holidays that allow them to see the authentic side of the continent.
According to travel writer Pauline Frommer US visitors are opting for alternative accommodation options and instead of booking into luxury hotels are renting rooms and private homes instead.
"It has to do with money, and it also has to do with the yearning to get out of the cookie-cutter vacation and see a more authentic side," she told the Associated Press.
For property investors this means adjusting their portfolios to meet the growing demand for these types of accommodations, shifting away from large holiday complexes towards smaller, more intimate rental properties.
Expanding high speed rail networks are expected to provide further incentives to tourists from America and other continents to visit Europe as they provide freedom to travel wherever and whenever they like.
"You've got the flexibility to literally hop from country to country as you want to," explained a spokesperson from Rail Europe.
