Traditional European destinations 'still popular with investors'

The continuing popularity of established markets in Europe among overseas investors has been highlighted by a financial provider.

Barclays said that countries including Spain, France and Italy were receiving an unprecedented amount of interest from British buyers.

Portugal was also said to be proving to be particularly popular among people buying both holiday homes and investment properties.

This is despite the popularity of emerging markets such as several eastern European countries.

Richard Exton, head of Barclays Buying Abroad, stated that the overseas property market was "flourishing".

He commented: "Buying abroad either as a permanent home or a holiday destination is now easier than ever before."

Mr Exton added that "record numbers" of people were "taking the plunge" and buying an overseas property.

According to recent estimates from the Association of British Travel Agents, people from the UK are likely to make up to 44 million foreign trips in 2007.
