Older Britons who have opted to retire abroad may be missing out on money they are entitled to claim, experts have warned.
Bank of Scotland International stated that state pensioners over the age of 60 were eligible to claim winter fuel allowances, even if they lived outside of the UK.
However, many were said to not be receiving this money, which has prompted the firm to recommend that overseas property buyers plan their finances before they move abroad.
Tony Wilcox, managing director of Bank of Scotland International, said that people had to find out which benefits they were able to claim or risk paying more on expenses such as fuel bills.
He commented: "Even though many expatriates choose to escape the colder months in the UK by moving to a warmer climate, their fuel bills are still likely to increase during the winter."
Earlier this year, the Office for National Statistics published data showing that during the 12 months to July 2006, 385,000 British nationals moved overseas.
