Britons who are planning to move overseas have been advised to consider learning the language of their new home abroad.

Amanda Lamb, presenter of Channel 4's overseas property investment show A Place in the Sun, said that familiarity with the native tongue could have a positive impact on expatriates' lives.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, she stated that it could make "such a difference" to people, as they would find it easier to assimilate.

Learning the language may also enhance the employability of expats, an issue which could be of considerable importance to younger people who are living abroad.

Ms Lamb also encouraged those who are moving abroad to spend about six months in their chosen location first.

She commented: "Visit at different times of the year - and definitely go in the winter to a tourist town to see if it still has the same pull."

This comes after currency specialist HiFX revealed that many Britons who are thinking of relocating abroad have bought a foreign property as a precursor to migration.
