A growing number of Britons are choosing to purchase property in the Spanish region of Murcia, particularly in inland areas.
Official data showed that villages away from the coastline have been attracting more and more people from the UK in the last eight years, reports Homes Worldwide.
According to the statistics, some rural areas have seen their expat communities increase in size by about 500 per cent.
Homes Worldwide described this figure as "striking", before saying that the region was popular with Britons who wanted to purchase "traditional" homes.
Many of these people were said to be buying property with a view to renovating later on.
However, coastal towns in Murcia were also found to have become more popular since the beginning of the decade.
Figures showed that across the region as a whole, the number of Britons residing there permanently was now more than 17,000 - up from 1,000 eight years ago.
According to NatWest International, Spain is a popular expat destination because it offers lifestyle benefits such as good weather and a pleasant natural environment.
