New golf boost hint for Costa del Sol

In news that may boost the Costa del Sol property market through extra tourism, it has been hinted that Valderrama could be staging a new tournament this time next year.

The course recently staged its last Volvo Masters event but moves are afoot to bring a new championship to the venue at the end of October in 2009, the Times reports.

Part of the plan would involve the Portugal Masters being moved forward a week to provide a large aggregate of prize money for golfers who participate in both events on the Iberian Peninsula.

The paper quoted an insider at Valderrama stating: "We have to move fast to bring all this off. Time is pressing."

Costa del Sol real estate may benefit because of the extra tourism gained through having two large golf events in the autumn of 2009, with the Volvo masters moving along the coast to the Finca Cortesin golf club.

Valderrama was the venue for the Ryder Cup in 1997.
