New regulations that will affect holiday lettings in the Valencia region have been announced. Ultimately, all owners who rent out their holiday home in the affected area should register with the tourist authorities.
The draft regulations were announced by the region's minister of tourism, Angelica Such.
As a result, owners of holiday homes in the Valencia region who rent them out on a short term basis and advertise on the internet will be required to register, reports Spanish Property Insight.
Valencian authorities claim this will enable the Department of Tourism to better control holiday lettings in the region and improve the quality of service for holidaymakers. The rules will affect holiday home rentals on the Costa Blanca and the Costa del Azahar as well as in Valencia Province .
Such explained that it is "fundamental to establish strict regulations to provide our tourists with holiday accommodation that is as regulated as possible". The draft regulations "address the worries and discontent in the tourism business with respect to the illegality of this type of accommodation", she continued.
It is thought that the new regulations are the result of a lobby from hoteliers wanting to limit the competition from private holiday home accommodation. They will also make it easier for the Spanish authorities to crack down on tax evasion by owners who fail to declare rental income.
