Those moving abroad to countries such as Spain for their retirement should work this out carefully, an expat portal has advised.
Shelter Offshore said the move does not suit or work for everyone and those who do undertake it must be prepared for various eventualities.
The portal advised: "You have to think ahead, plan ahead and be very realistic about what moving to live abroad in retirement will be like."
It noted the example of those who have moved to Spain and can not opt to move back to the UK at present due to the negative equity house price falls in the country have created.
The magazine suggested that the best way to succeed is by having "an open mind and taking a balanced approach".
Despite its price falls, Spain has become more popular with buyers in 2009, according to overseas mortgage provider Conti.
The firm said that 22 per cent of enquiries made so far this year have concerned the country, compared with 14 per cent in 2008.
