Holiday home owners have been encouraged to consider using their property to generate extra income.
According to property author Kurt Schefken, many lifestyle residences are left unoccupied for large parts of the year.
Therefore, he has suggested that since owners still have to pay a mortgage, they should make the most of their home and let it out to tenants.
Mr Schefken said this would allow property owners to make money from a house which would otherwise "just be sitting empty".
He added that Spain would be a particularly good location for holiday home buyers, partly because it still offers very affordable values.
"Property prices are less expensive than many other countries," he commented.
"And the climate makes it ideal for vacationing year round."
Earlier this week, the Association of British Travel Agents revealed that Spain is the most popular destination for bank holiday leisure travellers.
