Spanish government confident about economy

A Spanish government official has talked up the country's chances of overcoming the current slowdown in its economy.

Finance minister Pedro Solbes said there are a number of factors underpinning the economy which can help it emerge in a favourable position.

Speaking to the Financial Times, he stated that the country has seen considerable improvements over the last few years which could help it in the long run.

For example, he said it has benefited from lots of extra investment in the domestic economy, especially in areas such as its infrastructure.

Mr Solbes commented: "The long period of strong growth has brought lasting economic changes that have turned Spain into a modern, competitive and internationally integrated economy."

He added that these structural changes are set to remain in place and that Spain should enter a new period of growth within the next 2 years.

According to the Association of International Property Professionals, the country remains one of the most popular destinations among British property buyers.

Figures from the organisation show that Spain accounted for more than a quarter of overseas purchases last year.
