Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has said that Spain's economy will emerge from this year's downturn in a better condition during 2009.
In comments reported by Reuters, the Spanish prime minister told television channel Cuatro that there is "a certain and solid recovery on the horizon" for the economy.
He admitted that the country's financial sector and property market had been through a difficult period, but predicted that the latter half of 2009 will bring signs of a turnaround.
"In the second half [of the year] we are going to have some data that points to a recovery ... We are going to emerge strong from this crisis," Mr Zapatero said.
The prime minister has also predicted that Spain's recently-unveiled economic stimulus package will create new employment opportunities in the country "at a considerable rate" during 2009.
According to figures released by the Spanish government this week, the number of British people registered as resident in Spain rose to 352,000 this year.
