Currently, EU citizens, as well as Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein who work in Switzerland have the same rights to purchase real estate as Swiss nationals. Other foreigners working there, including Americans, are exempt from the restrictions only if they plan to use a property as a primary residence. Foreigners who take up full-time residence in Switzerland, and who make tax arrangements with the local authorities are also entitled to unrestricted property purchase.

Real estate prices in Switzerland are relatively low but, due to current restrictions on foreign ownership, the Swiss property market has been largely limited to national purchasers. However, overseas purchasers who invest in Switzerland enjoy ideal holiday homes in Alpine resorts, beautiful scenery, excellent skiing, clean air and a relaxed and civilized lifestyle.
