Britons buying more Turkish currency

A growing number of British consumers are choosing to purchase Turkish currency, it has been revealed.

According to the Post Office, sales went up by nearly 23% during the year to July 2008.

Figures also show that over the last 3 years, demand for the currency has risen by 130%.

This contrasts with an increase of just 8% for the euro over the same period.

Commenting on the findings, Helen Warburton of the Post Office said: "Accelerating sales of Turkish lira suggest that many UK tourists are shopping around in Europe."

She added that Turkey has become attractive option for British consumers because it offers a much lower cost of living than many eurozone members

This comes after M&S Money revealed that it has seen a 53% increase in the number of people buying Turkish lira over the last year.

The organisation said this is because 1.9 million holidaymakers from the UK have booked trips to Turkey this year - 20% more than in 2007.
