The number of people from the UK going on holiday to Turkey increased by 32% this year, according to new figures.

Data from the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) reveals that the falling value of the pound against the euro has caused demand for Turkish holiday resorts to rise significantly.

The number of people booking holidays in Turkey rose to 2 million in 2008, while the organisation also revealed that north African destinations such as Morocco are experiencing a similar rise in visitor levels.

A spokesperson for Abta told the Telegraph: "With the position of the currencies unlikely to get much better, we expect people will continue to look further afield to north Africa and Turkey, which offer much better value for money and where you can still find dinner for two for £20."

In the past 18 months, airlines such as easyJet and Ryanair have added new flights to Turkey and Morocco as more Britons opt for those destinations.

Abta spokesperson Frances Tuke recently said that Turkey is popular with people going abroad over the Christmas and new year period for some "winter sun".
