Istanbul attracting visitors to Turkey

Turkey's profile as an investment destination is benefiting from the growing number of holidaymakers heading to Istanbul.

The Turkish capital has emerged as a fashionable city-break destination in recent months, with many British visitors attracted by affordable flights and the city's unique culture, the Guardian reports.

According to figures from the Turkish tourism board, Istanbul enjoyed an 18% increase in visitors from the UK during 2008.

The Guardian notes that the favourable exchange rate is also making the city formerly known as Constantinople popular with British tourists.

"It isn't just cultural value that is attracting the tourists - Turkey is not in the eurozone and is one of the few countries where sterling has held its own over the past year," the newspaper explains.

Istanbul is also included in a list of 'hot new holiday destinations' compiled by thelondonpaper.com, which praises the city's "magical setting on the Bosphorus" and "cool riverside bars and restaurants".
