Positive outlook for Turkey tourism

Favourable exchange rates are making Turkey an attractive holiday destination in the current economic climate.

According to Turkish news provider hurriyet.com, affordable holidays are increasingly important as people around Europe react to the financial crisis, with Turkey offering many budget-friendly options.

The website reports that Turkey's domestic tourism market is also in good health ahead of the Festival of Sacrifice, an important event in the Muslim calendar which takes place early next month.

Commenting on which areas of the market are expected to see high activity, Sarp Ozkar of tour operator Prontotur said: "Well-priced and short-term culture tours will draw attention."

Turkey's emergence as a destination for culture-seeking holidaymakers is set to continue over the next few years, with Istanbul named a European Capital of Culture for 2010.

Official figures recently revealed that the number of people visiting Turkey from Israel has increased by 10% in 2008.
