Turkey needs to be more easily accessible by air, according to one of the country's tourist officials.

Timur Bayindir of the Turkish Hoteliers' Association (TUROB) told Today's Zaman that more flights were needed to boost the tourist and property investment sectors.

However, he said the holiday industry was performing well despite these issues and achieved "extraordinarily good" results that year.

This has prompted Mr Bayinder, chairman of TUROB, to predict that further growth will be seen during 2008.

He commented: "We look back on a very strong performance in 2007 and expect an even more successful coming year."

The remarks come after British Midland Airways (bmi) revealed that it has more competition in Turkey that in other location it services.

Gail Holden, commercial development manager at bmi, told the Turkish Daily News that the level of the competition was the biggest challenge it was currently facing.
