Turkey developing highend tourism market

The number of luxury holiday resorts in Turkey is increasing to complement the country's reputation as a budget-friendly destination.

Although traditionally viewed as a 'good value' option for thrifty holidaymakers, Turkey is also targeting the high-end of the tourism market by investing in new hotels, according to the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta).

Frances Tuke, spokesperson for the organisation, said that Turkey is set to be one of the "big growth areas" in global tourism this year.

She explained that the country is looking to build on its reputation for "good value and high standards" by catering to wealthy holidaymakers as well as families.

"Turkey has put a lot of new investment into hotels and five stars. What has been quite a good value destination has broadened its value to the high-end market as well," Ms Tuke commented.

The Turkish tourism authority recently claimed that over 26 million holidaymakers visited the country during 2008, pushing Turkey's tourism income up to $21 billion (£14.4 billion).
